Tente imaginar a seguinte cena: estamos no ano de 1967, o auge do movimento hippie e do rock psicodélico. Por toda a américa e pelo mundo, jovens andam de bata, cultivam paz e amor, tomam LSD, fumam maconha, tudo ao embalo de bandas como o Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Love, Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Doors, The Mamas and the Papas, além Bob Dylan, The Who, Beatles, Rolling Stones, etc. Agora imagine uma versão totalmente radical disso: uma banda em que os músicos, principalmente seu líder, compõem uma ode à heroína, arrancam sons horripilantes de suas guitarras a ponto de espantar qualquer engenheiro de som do estúdio, e letras que falam de sadomasoquismo, drogas, sexo, submundo, caos e homosexualidade. Acrescente uma turnê em pequenas casas, com performances esquisitas, uma deslumbrante cantora húngara com um forte sotaque e tudo isso dirigido por Andy Warhol. Só poderia ser um escandaloso fracasso. Mas o que ninguém previu na época é que esse grupo se tornaria um dos mais importantes e influentes de todos os tempos. O nome? The Velvet Underground. The Velvet Underground foi uma influente banda de rock norte-americana formada em 1964, por Lou Reed (voz e guitarra), Sterling Morrison (guitarra), John Cale (baixo), substituido por Doug Yule em 1968, Nico (voz), Angus MacAlise (bateria) substituido mais tarde por Maureen Tucker, que tinha como financiador e mentor intelectual Andy Warhol. "The Velvet Underground & Nico" é o álbum de estreia da banda lançado em 1967. As vendas do LP foram pífias quando do lançamento, mas reza a lenda que quem o comprou montou uma banda após ouvi-lo - por exemplo artistas como Iggy Pop, David Bowie, Depeche Mode, Joy Division, Sonic Youth, Jesus and Mary Chain, Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails e The Strokes foram influenciados pelo Velvet Underground.
